My dog's, Shadow, blood sugar went way up today and we just got back from taking him to the vets. He's fine now but I'm on seizure watch just in case.
For those who don't know Shadow is my eight year old diabetic mini shnouzer(Can't spell that for my life). He's prone to high and low blood sugar and we have to give him insulin twice a day.
Well tonight when I went to feed him I noticed he wasn't coming upstairs. I went down to get him and noticed that he had pooped all over the carpet. I tried to get him to go upstairs to eat so I could clean up the mess but he only made it up two steps before walking into the walk and sliding back down.
He's had issues with the stairs before so I didn't think anything of it at that point but when he tried to follow me into the downstairs kitchen to get a plastic bag I saw him walk into the door frame and one of the chairs, both of which were on his right side.
I was getting worried, but I got the baggy and cleaned up his mess, all during which he was walking in circles and stumbling around. I was actually starting to fear that he had had a seizure at while I was at school.
I carried him upstairs and gave him his food. It took him a minute to find the bowl and start eating, eating from the left side of the dish and completely missing the right side. I told mom what I saw downstairs and she looked a little worried but told me not to worry, she needed to leave the house soon to go to one of her set ups.
What got both of us really worried was when he stumbled to the right while eating and stepped into his water bowl. It wasn't that but the fact that he was looking straight up at the ceiling the whole time some what confused.
Let's just say we left pretty quickly and took him to the vet. There I spent the current five worst minutes of my life, fearing the worst.
There's nothing worse than sitting in the vet's office not knowing what was happening.
Finaly we were told what had happened. Shadow's blood sugar was three times higher than it was supposed to be. My poor dog, who was already going blind, was having issues with the right side of his body(hence the stumbling and walking into things) and the vission in his right eye had gone down considibly. We still don't know yet if it is a permident effect.
When I got home with him(Thankfully) I had to block off the staircase so he wouldn't actually fall down it, and brought his bead bed into my room. Like I said earlier I'm on seizure watch with him(The vet actually told me exactly what to do if he does have one) and I'm as worried a heck. (I'm home alone atm)
I don't know what I'd do if anything were to happen.
